Having just seen all 17 cartoons in this set, I have to admit that for cartoons over 60 years old that the animation holds up to even today's standards. This is because they used the original masters of the cartoons for this DVD release. These cartoons run between 7 to 10 minutes long and were shown in theatres between 1941-1943, before the main attraction.
These cartoons are extremely enjoyable and fascinating since they came out only a few years after the comic book debuted (June 1938). Even Superman's logo is not the same as the one we know today! The cartoons, as you may have guessed, were set during the period they were made, so you may encounter Superman fighting against the Japanese (The Eleventh Hour, Japoteurs) or the Germans, something you would never see today.
The picture is sometimes jittery in a few of the cartoons, but mostly the picture is crisp and clean, with very few defects (the DVD informs us at the beginning of the disc that we may come across some age-related defects in the cartoons). I would also like to point out that in other DVD releases of these cartoons that Paramount logo at the beginning is skipped, but in this release, they have it in every cartoon (and sometimes at the end as well). Finally, this release is put out by the Platinum Disc Corporation and purists should be warned that they put their logo at the right hand side of the screen every so often during the cartoons. It's a minor annoyance (which goes away after a minute or so) but it's a small price to pay for what you get: great stories, excellent animation, crisp and bright colours, and great sound !
